Nancy Botwin, the lead character has been widowed recently and is still financially unstable. Her mission is to try and maintain the lifestyle of her house in the suburbs. The difference is that she takes up a job as a dealer in the neighborhood in order to be able to do so. Though she is not easily fit for the job she tries her best to make it as a thriving dealer. She tries to learn all the trade secrets from Heylia James, played by Tonye Patano and Romany Malco who plays the part of Conrad Shepard. Both of these characters are her suppliers.

When she is not busy working as a dealer she tries to run her house which consist of Shane and Silas played by Alexander Gould and Hunter Parrish who are her two sons and Andy, played by Justin Kirk who is her brother-in-law and an very lazy person. Andy is the epitome of a grown up lazy useless guy and he once has cyber sex with a sixteen year old deaf girl, who is Silas's girlfriend. Elizabeth Perkins is Nancy's neighbor who is quite psychotic and weird. Celia Hodes is the charilady while Kevin Nealon plays the part of Doug who is her accountant who also smokes pot.
During the first season the story revolves around Nancy and how she starts as a small neighborhood dealer to rise and come to be an leading city dealer. She thinks about beginning a bakery so that she can cover up her drug racket while she tries to conduct her two sons. Her two sons are also quite inspiring characters. One of them is known for causing troubles by biting people, writing explicit lyrics for rap and sometimes beginning fire. The other son suddenly is into drugs and sex as a way of dealing with the death of his father.
Nancy has quite a few problems herself. It seems that through Weeds seasons 1-5 dvd boxsets, all the episodes depict her having some sort of troubles all the time. To make things more interesting, all the other characters on the show too have their own fair share of problems like breast cancer and having to go to Iraq for fighting for the Army.
Weeds is quite an amusing and inspiring series since it deals with real life situations that are faced by millions of people all over the world and turns it into an inspiring series. Needless to say the acting of the cast, especially of the lead character is flawless which managed to rake in thousands of loyal fans for the show.
